Woody, Nancy E.
"Nancy and the children managed to survive the war and reconstruction period. Times were terrible then. There were men who did not belong to either the Union or Confederacy who roamed the countryside robbing and plundering. These thieves came to Nancy's home and took the last horse she had and put a rope around her neck in front of her children. They told her they were going to hang her if she didn't give them gold. Her brother-in-law, Joseph Daves, happened to be home on furlough from the Confederate Army. The thieves saw him coming across the field toward them and they fled, leaving the rope around Nancy's neck. But they did get the horse. Great Granddaddy, Green Daves, traced them into the mountains of North Carolina but they evaded him and escaped." Story told by Stanley Daves.55
